How to Get Started in Triathlon
Tips from Coach Henninger on how to get started in triathlon, even if you're choosing to do it on your own.
So, you know the basics - Swim, then bike, then run. Sounds fun! But what are the distances? Do you have to run a marathon? I've coached a lot of new athletes and have heard all the questions. So, here is some info that may help you get started.
How long is a triathlon?
There are an endless number of possible distances, but they generally fall into one of a few categories: Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic, 70.3, and Ironman. Times to finish will vary from around 1 hour for a typical athlete up to 16 hours for a full Ironman.
Is it expensive?
It can be. For one thing you're going to need all the basic equipment - A bike, a helmet, and running shoes. On top of that you'll probably want a few other things like goggles, bike shoes, a wetsuit, and some type of race clothing. Once you have all of that you have race fees which range from $60-$800 depending on the distance.
Is Ironman the ultimate goal?
That's up to you. As an athlete, I've done all of the distances and I must say that there's no feeling like finishing a full Ironman. But, there may be nothing I love more than Sprint triathlon. To get out there and be able to really go for speed is a great feeling. And to finish a race before 9am and have a full day to do stuff is amazing. I'm kind of sad when I see athletes feel like they have to go longer, although I do know the feeling.
